I'm a lightweight with nicotine and each time I've smoked this I've gotten super buzzed. There is a some very good Virginia sweetness when smoked and that aged earthiness we all expect from a good red leaf. As curious as I am given the appetizing reviews that others have written about it, I nonetheless can't bring myself to forget that, for my tastes anyway, Cornell & Diehl has always been a purveyor of tobacco mixtures that tend toward the harsher, dryer, and monotone end of the spectrum. Really a wonderful blend but dont let the nicotine slap you too hard! Taken straight from Carolina soil, these top-tiered Virginias are all grown, threshed, blended, and then lovingly pressed and carefully sliced right here in the heart of old tobacco country. So, when I saw "Carolina Red Flake", Sutliff Matured Red Virginia 515 RC-1 came to mind, as did Sutliff's Crumble Kake Red Virginia (alas, I missed the 5100 -- I can only imagine) . Also, this roughness quickly comes to naught while smoking. I find it has slightly less of a nic hit than the most, already mildish VA flakes (a positive for me) and a slightly deeper flavour. But these small batch blends have all been outstanding and CRF is another great one in this series. Carolina Red Flake is one of those tobaccos that has a cult following. The bottom two-thirds of the bowl was more reminiscent of McClelland's 40th Anniversary (closer to a straight VA as opposed to something called "Red Flake" -- not to engage in unnecessary criticism). This is more rich, with a bit of a kick to it - strength says medium, but I found it to be a little stronger. Burns at a moderate pace, cool and clean with no dull or harsh spots. Its got a touch of caramel or brown sugar and natural sweetness. As we witnessed in the original release the lack of preservatives or vinegar led to the growth of mold but was quickly fixed by C&D. I remember being a newer pipe smoker and trying it in blends that had it as a base like Autumn Evening and not really caring for it, now its my favorite part of the blend. Im pretty late to the game with this blend but finally picked up a tin. It lights and stays lit wonderfully as you smoke it. It is rich, medium body, and a little sweet with a slight tanginess (but not in a citrus way). I've never experienced a creeping bite like this. The only thing I differ on from what Jim notes is that it is fairly complex. As you work your way through the bowl, it builds in both sweetness and spiciness and mellows considerably. I didn't know if another Red Virginia blend of the quality of 40th would hit the market after McClelland closed their doors, but Carolina Red Flake finally makes me not miss them as much.
