I'm a lightweight with nicotine and each time I've smoked this I've gotten super buzzed. There is a some very good Virginia sweetness when smoked and that aged earthiness we all expect from a good red leaf. As curious as I am given the appetizing reviews that others have written about it, I nonetheless can't bring myself to forget that, for my tastes anyway, Cornell & Diehl has always been a purveyor of tobacco mixtures that tend toward the harsher, dryer, and monotone end of the spectrum. Really a wonderful blend but dont let the nicotine slap you too hard! Taken straight from Carolina soil, these top-tiered Virginias are all grown, threshed, blended, and then lovingly pressed and carefully sliced right here in the heart of old tobacco country. This is a really great smooth, no bite tobacco which I also learned that Red Virginia usually has a low sugar content and I am sure that is why it is bite free. C&D has really made something special with this blend. The tanginess boarders on sour occasionally and this adds to the complexity of the smoke. Then as the last Grey ash was spent. The smoke is light, with a woody, grassy smell and the already mentioned note of bitter chocolate. Probably the only complaint I would have if I had one is that the enhanced sweetness reduces it's "bite" and I like the bite a lot, that's why I mostly smoke untopped straight VA's and burleys (with the exception of LC Santee). Strangely, but wonderfully, it's a "fill it and forget it" type of blend from a maintenence perspective which is rare for a straight Virginia blend. The second third gets darker, richer, and earthier. it does have that grass smell in the background but definitely cranberry. It brings out the high notes quite well. Red virginias were pleasant with earthiness, tangy sweetness, woodsiness and fruit.. some decent starting age to the tobacco but not anything special.. certainly not much older than most tins you can find at b&m' that have sat for a few years.. perfect 4 star blend no, so I'm giving it a 2.9. It does light easily and stays lit with no need to relight throughout the smoke. The combination of sweet and tart really makes for an outstanding blend. The tobacco has quite a characteristic caramel-malt aftertaste - as if you tasted a glass of red ale with your tongue - and this is markedly different from Opening Night. So, when I saw "Carolina Red Flake", Sutliff Matured Red Virginia 515 RC-1 came to mind, as did Sutliff's Crumble Kake Red Virginia (alas, I missed the 5100 -- I can only imagine) . Also, this roughness quickly comes to naught while smoking. I find it has slightly less of a nic hit than the most, already mildish VA flakes (a positive for me) and a slightly deeper flavour. But these small batch blends have all been outstanding and CRF is another great one in this series. Carolina Red Flake is one of those tobaccos that has a cult following. The bottom two-thirds of the bowl was more reminiscent of McClelland's 40th Anniversary (closer to a straight VA as opposed to something called "Red Flake" -- not to engage in unnecessary criticism). Right off the bat, there is a dominant flavor of earthy pepper with a barely detectable note of plum sweetness. Significantly better, THIS is the year. This is more rich, with a bit of a kick to it - strength says medium, but I found it to be a little stronger. Burns at a moderate pace, cool and clean with no dull or harsh spots. Its got a touch of caramel or brown sugar and natural sweetness. As we witnessed in the original release the lack of preservatives or vinegar led to the growth of mold but was quickly fixed by C&D. I remember being a newer pipe smoker and trying it in blends that had it as a base like Autumn Evening and not really caring for it, now its my favorite part of the blend. Im pretty late to the game with this blend but finally picked up a tin. It lights and stays lit wonderfully as you smoke it. A gentle hay-like flavour is notable throughout a bowl, it doesn't make it too ''light'' a flavour but does reduce any chance of the fruity side seeming too clumsy. Tin Note - The traditional Virginia sweetness of hay hits you right away and does not end. I bought 5 tins. It was not overpowering and lingured on the tongue between draws. I love Peterson Billiards and have examples of all the common sizes, including another X105. I have NOT opened the tins and smoked it. The room note is a notch stronger. I write while I smoke and absentmindedly puff away continuously with little regard for the pipe. I just don't like them. I just returned to the pipe after a 12+ year hiatus. CRF 2022 arrived and I put 2 away and opened one tin to smoke now. C&D's small batch is one of the best tobaccos for new smokers or veterans. It is rich, medium body, and a little sweet with a slight tanginess (but not in a citrus way). I've never experienced a creeping bite like this. The only thing I differ on from what Jim notes is that it is fairly complex. As you work your way through the bowl, it builds in both sweetness and spiciness and mellows considerably.
